I recently bought a mic, and have set it up so it records etc..

Problem is, i practically have to have my mouth 0.1mm from the mic to hear myself decently when i do a sound recording..

Mic balance up, and I can't get into options/advanced in the Volume Control, so no mic boost option..

I'm running win98/ have an onboard (garh) C-media CMI8738 sound..

Just need to know either how I can get mic. boost to happen, so I can have the mic over 3 inches from mouth and be able to hear myself.. or something.. else

    Any help/idea's/..yeah be .. helpful..

Look on the back of your computer, where you plugged in the microphone. There may be a small "thumbwheel" volume control next to the jack - there may be more than one, because there's usually a volume control for the output as well. Check the instructions that came with your sound card.
