    Just for some foundation knowledge about YOUR vmm32.vxd:

    http://www.wintrouble.net/discus/messages/56/776.html

    It is the first half of this that I am suggesting as a "read ". It is already to late for the manual backup. Is it possible you have a backup of YOUR vmm32.vxd file somewhere?

    =============
    It's been awhile since I've addressed any vmm32.vxd problem and I can't recall the success ratio of recovering from this unscathed, meaning "not harmed or changed" or "at what cost ". What steps should be taken after replacing this vxd????

    May I suggest you use the help-net data base of past posts and check out the experiences of other users who had the same problem.

    search

    Use vmm32.vxd as the keyword filter and make sure win98 is the Forum being searched.

    ============
    I'll have a look around and see what your alternatives are but if you beat me to it, please remember to edit your post with results of this problem.

    To Broni,
    I didn't mean to barge in here and appear to take over the post. I just felt that the poster needed a little foreknowledge on what this driver is and what he did. If you got a plan for the "Fix-me-Up" by all means, "advise away ". :D

    Have you not got a backup in Sysbckup?

    I must confess that I cannot remember whether I put it there or the system did?

    I know the horse has bolted but when you get straight have a look at File Verification . I have my vmm32.vxd checked at each and every Restart/Shutdown. If it is found to be corrupted then the Restart/Shutdown can be aborted and vmm32.vxd replaced by a backup.

    Z4u, you should reinstall windows. It would be easier and safer than to try to create one manually. Vmm32.Vxd is created by windows setup, and is machine specific, as per Goddezz1's link.
    If you do an overlay install, nothing will be lost. In other words, do not format, just run setup.

    Sidenote: Vmm32.Vxd is not in my C:\Windows\System\Sysbckup folder, but soon may be.
