    Hello,

I'm trying to fix a friend's computer, which runs Windows 98.

She recently had a virus (she's not sure exactly what but something called W32... or similar) and now she cannot get into Windows as it tells her that there is a problem with the file VMM32/ifsmgr.VXD and she needs to reinstall.

Is the correct procedure to enter command prompt only mode, rename the VMM32 file and then reinstall Windows 98??

Don't want to go ahead unless that's right as it's not my PC and don't want to mess it up further!

    Thanks for any comments.

Now a days almost all are called W32.something.

I've always held the opinion to do a complete clean install after a virus is discovered on a system. The system was compromised; you have no way of knowing what else installed (backdoors, Trojans, keyloggers) was.

There is another way other than reinstalling windows. But it isn't the file Vmm32.Vxd that seems to be the problem, but the file Ifsmgr.Vxd located in the C:\Windows\System\Vmm32 folder. Here is how to replace it.
You need a boot floppy, you can get a file that will create one from Bootdisk, and the Win CD, or the location of the windows setup files on the drive.
Choose with CD rom support when using the floppy. Before the A:\> appears, there will be a message giving you the drive letter for the CD, it will not be the usual letter. When it is done booting, insert the CD, use the drive letter in place of the X in the commands below, press Enter at the end of each line.
    c:
    cd\windows\system\vmm32
    ren ifsmgr.vxd ifsmgr.old
    extract /y X:\win98\win98_54.cab ifsmgr.vxd

You should get the message that 1 file was extracted.

Then if you can get on the internet, go to here, and get the download that gets that file up to date. That file is part of an critical update for the windows OS.

However, I do agree with Arie about formatting the drive, but using the above will allow you to backup your documents.
