About 2 weeks ago my sister installed Vista Ultimate on her computer (a clean install). She installed it and activated it my house because I have high speed.... and she could run all updates at the same time.

A few days ago she noticed a problem. Vista says she has 15 days to activate it.

It is a store bought copy, but she has dialup internet connection because she lives so far away from any area with high speed she can only use a modem, but Vista does not dectect her modem.

I've noticed that on my system with Vista it seems to check the key everytime I turn my computer on (at least thats what I think its doing) but on hers its says it cannot validate the key or something like that...

Is there anything she can do about this. MicroSoft was of no help, because all they would basically say is she should upgrade her internet to high speed, but she does not have that option because of where she lives.

    Edit:

Sorry, I forgot to mention that..

Yes she can activate it by phone, which she has done, but after a few days it tells her to activate it again.

    Actvation went like this:

1st time: Activated over the internet
2nd time: Activated over the telelphone

Now it says she has 15 days (actually 12 now) to activate it. When she called MS they suggested she leave her computer connected to the internet. But because Vista will not detect her modem (We have tried many different modems, inc many that said they were Vista compatible) she cannot connect. Its impossible for her to leave her computer connected because she does need the use of her telelphone anyway.
MS also told her, her only other option would be to call and reactivate every 29 days.

I have downloaded updated drivers for her for each modem, but Vista still will not recognize any of the modems...

All sorts of strange problems? If it was me, I would back up any data and reinstall, not only reformatting, but removing the partition/s and remaking them. I might even go so far as doing a zero/low-level format.

The install is not very old, so consider it. I would not want to have to do activation every 30 days and have the reminders running constantly.

Modems will just "not install ", strange. Another reason I would wipe everything and start again.

My suggestion is not to struggle with a system that does not seem to be working correctly.

Check that there are no marks or scratches on the installation DVD.

PS Assuming it is not an OEM computer that may have proprietary drivers. Otherwise you will need to get a version of Vista from the OEM manufacturer.
