Advice from MS knowledge base (I'm pretty sure that's where I got it.) says if you have over 512MB of RAM, you can reset virtual memory settings as follows:

    Min: 1/2 Ram
Max 3X Ram (if I remember it said "Just in case ")

It also says if you have more than 1HDD, put 1/2 of recommended settings on 1 drive and balance on 2nd drive. Says Windows will read both simultaneously and speed up computer.

I have 3 drives, so I set 1/2 of recommended settings on drive "E" and 1/2 on "F" and disabled on "C ". Get warning, "C" must have min of 767MB of VM for memory dump. So, I put 767 back on "C "

Am I off base on this?

Not really - there are many opinions re virtual memory. Search the board for 'pagefile' or 'swapfile' - there was a very long thread on this quite recently. See MS KB article 314482

Pagefile on C only needed if debugging 'Write debugging information' enabled.

I use a fixed pagefile on a dedicated partition on a separate HD - seems to work OK for me - set at 1.5 x RAM (1.5 Gb) which is probably too big, but space is not at a premium.

I have Athlon XP 2400+, 100 GB HD with four partitions, 1 GB RAM, and use no pagefile at all. System runs just as fast, if not faster, than when I did use one.

martinr121 - the "debugging information" is, as noted above, highly tech stuff and of no use to any of us normal mortals. And only of use to super-techs in case of a crash that needs analysis.

I don't like to waste the space so have my system drive pagefile set at 2Mb. If I ever do get into a bad crash situation where the debugging information would be needed by someone (and that sure wouldn't be me :D ) then I would just reset the size on the system drive so it would capture the information from the next crash.

Well thanks everyone for your input. I think I'll just get rid of the debugging and lower the virtual memory settings to a reasonable number.
