    Greetings.

My mom's laptop has been running extremely slow for awhile now. She has a Dell Inspiron with XP SP2, 1.6GHz Pentium, and 504 MB of RAM. We've tried doing a hard-drive defrag, uinstalling unused programs, and numerous spyware scans via Spybot and AdAware. All these have had little or no effect. We suspect a virus might be slowing things down, hence my post here.

I downloaded HijackThis, and ran a scan. Below is the log:

More often than not it's malicious programs that cause a computer to start running slow, the other time it's just because people install too many useless products like browser toolbars and 19 different spyware scanners. Personally I like to use AVG 8 Free and Super Anti Spyware as my protection against spyware (it works pretty well, too). That's all I use, if you have 3 or 4 different anti-virus and 2 or 3 spyware programs (I've seen people do that) you could be wasting a lot of memory and adding little or no protection against malicious code.

    AVG 8 Free
    http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe

    Super Anti Spyware
    http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

In order to find the source of any memory hogs you might have on your computer try this:

    1) Press and hold CTRL+ALT+DELETE in order to bring up the task manager.
    2) Click "Processes ", then click the "Mem Usage" column to arrange the processes in descending order by memory use.

Look at the first few at the top and see how much memory they are using and then try to determine if they are either necessary or not supposed to be there. If you don't know what a process does a quick Google search of the process name will tell you everything you need to know.

While still in the task manager also click "Performance" and look at the CPU usage bar in the top left corner. If it is constantly running at 90-100% then the culprit is probably some sort of virus (which wouldn't necessarily show up on your process list).

    HTH,

    Mike
