verifying security descriptors

I am working on a Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop. The system boots up checking the disk then ends saying verifying security descriptors. The laptop would not get past this point. I took the hard drive out and connected to my computer and ran a check disk. It fixed the errors. Put the hard drive back in and the system booted right up. But after a few minutes the computer starts to slow down and hang up or become unresponsive. Personally I think this is a sign of a failing hard drive but wanted to get some input from this forum first before I tell my client. I am thinking of connecting it to my computer again and run check disk again. Anyone have any thoughts.

I would also agree that it looks like the HD is failing. Best to see what they want/need backed up. Better to be safe than sorry.

Note that chkdsk can take many hours, even more than a day to complete on large drives - often appearing to be hung. Perhaps you did not let it complete when run on the notebook.

Computers slowing down is not normally a sign of hard drive failure. A failing hard drive usually results in errors and system lock ups. And if mechanical in nature, unusual noises.

I would note the drive's maker, then download the diagnostics utility from their site - all the major makers have diagnostics programs available for download. (Hard Drive Diagnostics - listed by maker)

Notebooks slowing down is often a sign of overheating - an inherent problem with all notebooks - due to restricted space and limited air flow, and difficult to clean heat-trapping dust.
