I must be honest, I am an XP user... but there are some things that I miss about 98SE. There was a way of using Safe Mode in 98 in order to find duplicate hardware/device entries (and clean them up) in a way that you could not in standard mode. Was that Device Mgr or were there other ways, too? Thanks, Larry

Not sure what you mean, its been many years ago I used 98

If I think what it is, it still works in XP: on the menu of Device Manager, View > Show hidden devices.

    Hello Larry,
I think I know what you mean. When you go into Device Manager in Safe Mode in 98 some devices may have long lists of the same entry. Only one device is shown when you look in Device Manager in normal mode. This is a sign to me that the correct drivers are not installed/being loaded and Windows is installing a new set when problems are encountered.

You should highlight and remove all the listings of that device.

You need to find the correct or updated drivers for the device (check the instructions for whether the device needs to be connected when the driver installation program is run).

    Matt
