For about a week now when I go to mail with Netscape 7.2 I get a typical message like "You have 3 new messages." But it turns out I only have one. Today it said I had one new message and there was none. This is a recent thing. Any ideas?

    Welcome to the Forum, feldwebel!

    feldwebel,

Do you follow the daily maintenance routine described in the "Sticky" at the top of the Forum: Preventive Browser Maintenance.

If not, for immediate help, I would suggest opening Mail & Newsgroups
Click on: File | Empty Trash.
    Next:
Click on: File | Compact Folders

    Close Netscape
Browse to your Profiles folder here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt.

    Delete the Cache folder
    Delete the XUL.mfl file

Hopefully this should correct the problem...

I had a problem like this in a news subscription, using an old NS7.x (it went away with the new version). I was getting three messages, when there was one, and I could actually multiply the number, at will, in multiples of three (I got up to 27). I was a case of corrupted summary file (.msf). When I deleted the .msf file, with Netscape closed, everything was ok, for a while. In rare cases, I saw a duplicate of a message which had been deleted. Compacting folders did the job.

    False alarm

It's embarrassing to admit this, but I finally figured out that the vanishing emails hadn't vanished at all. They had been shunted off to other folders by some filters that I had made, and I just didn't notice.

I am glad you looked. I wonder how many other people have had this problem, and, never, figured it out. Don't be embaressed. Someone may be helped.
