I have 4 rear and 2 front USB2 ports on my PC.
The 2 front ones for some reason are not working...yes connected..as they have worked before.
Just wondering if anyone has a FIX for me.
    Thankyou
    Roy66

roy66--I understand you have an HP PC. Is it still under warranty?
I presume you have tried rebooting to see if that fixes things.
Have you looked in Device Manager|right click on each of the USB Root Hub entries|Properties to see if the device is functioning (or shows a yellow warning sign)? I do not think there would be any harm by searching for new drivers using the Drivers tab. But a look at HP's support site
    http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html
or telephoning them might be quicker.
    http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/wwcontact.html
I just had some USB ports go on my new Dell. Since it was still under warranty, Dell replaced the equipment (after some fiddling with drivers, etc. failed.).
In my case the unresponsive USB port was shown as Unknown Device in the Device Manager list.

    Jim,

    Thanks for your response.

All USB's show up OK and working in Device Manager.
Inserted XP disk then "updated" drivers for each USB indicator in Device Manager..made no difference.

It is a made up PC..no particular brand with Asus P4B533 mother board.

As I said..the 4 at rear are Ok....
    2 at front?????no go???

    Hi Roy66,
Did a bit of searching. Asus took me round and round in circles and left me nowhere. I really dislike their support website now, they have a good knowledgebase, but you cannot access it.

*First reseat the connection from the case to the motherboard*

From what I saw I might think that the problem is a resource conflict. There is really only one way to adjust them and that is to rearrange the PCI cards in the slots. This will allocate different rescources for those pieces of hardware and not have to share with the USB controller(s). It looks like you have broadband and built-in audio, but if you have a PCI modem or PCI soundcard, put them in the last slots. I saw that in another thread PeteC recommended leaving the PCI slot next to the graphics card empty (the first slot), I agree with that as well. If the arrangement is pretty much this way, shuffle the cards around in the slots. You won't have to reinstall any drivers, Windows will just change the allocation and sharing of resources.

It may be just a case of removing and letting Windows reinstall the USB controller drivers, but I would find and install any updated drivers.

I always wonder about these being an SP2 problem when I see previously working hardware just stop working.

    Matt

    mattman ,
Thanks for all the trouble you have taken to assist me with this problem.
Following your first suggestion and taking on a bit of researching myself I ventured to try and figure how I could remove the front face of the PC to access the 2xUSB's. The reason for this was to backtrack the wiring.
On backtracking I found that the wires had become disconnected and have located the USB2 pins on the MB.
Each USB connection has 4 wires...Black, White, Red, Green.
    Black=ground....White=2(in a circle)-D.....Red=2(in a circle)VCC.....Gree=2(in a circle)+D.......The other set are the same except they have 1(in a circle)
Regrettably the coding on the wires do not match the coding on the motherboard so I am nervously reluctant to make any connections at this stage.
Quite frankly I am at a loss as to how they became disconnected.

Checking out the manual for your Asus P4B533 and my Asus A8V Deluxe the USB connectors are - not surprisingly, the same, although the exact nomenclature is different.

Refer to page 2-29 of your manual and make the connections as follows ....

    GND - Black
    LDP5 - Green 1 +D
    LDM5 - White 1 -D
    USB +5v - Red 1

    and

    GND - Black
    LDP6 - Green 2 +D
    LDM6 - White 2 -D
    USB +5v - Red 2

    Note - DP = D+, DM = D-

    THANKYOU----THANKYOU---THANKYOU

As this is all a bit overwhelming for a semi/un educated 70 year old who took on computers as a retirement interest after looking in on a computer club.

Just sitting in on that club and beginning to realise the numerous problems was enough to cause me to be apprehensive about getting involved with computers.

You had me looking up the dictionary about nomenclature and you have still thrown me with Note - DP = D+, DM = D-

    Fiddly little connections they were.
At last they are functioning even if they show up as Removable disk G,H,I,J when connected to.

Don't know how you figured out each wires place but thats why I ask and you answer.

    Thanks again..very much to ALL.

    roy66 - delighted to help out :)
    Explanation ....

DP stands for D positive, equivalent to D+
DM stands for D minus, equivalent to D-
When you connect a multi card reader - i.e. one which has a number of slots for CF, SD, etc flash cards? That is correct, the computer sees each slot in the card as a different drive.
I build computers for myself and friends - about a dozen in the past 2 years :)

Even though this thread is solved I have a side question.

While looking through the 'dump' that was put up I noticed that there were only 4 USB Hubs listed. I'm just curious if that's how it should have been or if there are now 6. Just curious. Was gonna point out that I only saw 4 but then saw it was already solved...

I would expect that if the cable for the two in front was not connected.

    jaylach,

6 in all was correct but 2 had become unwired.
How about I do another 'wrap' for the more advanced than me to analyse again....But ALL is O.K. for now.
