I use an usb mouse that is wired on my winxp laptop. Sometimes it lights up when I boot up and sometimes it doesn't ... when it doesn't I have to unplug it and plug it in again. any thoughts on this? there is no ps2 port on this new computer or I would have changed immediately. I installed the driver but what worries me is that it didn't specifically say winxp on the box. It's an hp mouse and I use a new compact wide screen x1010. Any thoughts? The salesman said xp would automatically configure it but I installed the software anyway. It said I couldn't have any additional driver on the machine except the normal ps2 so I removed the old rf mouse driver ... which never worked for very long even though it was small and cute.

Possibly a faulty USB port (hardware, not software) - or a faulty mouse.

Can you try the mouse in another PC to prove if it's the mouse or the USB port? - or in another USB on the laptop?

Can you beg, borrow or steal another USB mouse to try in the laptop.

If the mouse is OK in another PC - you should not need to load any drivers, one further suggestion is to go into Device Manager and remove the USB ports - reboot and let Windows find them again.

Alternatively return the laptop as you indicate it is new.

I have three usb ports and it does the same thing in all of them.
So it must be the mouse. Funny. It's an optical mouse and it lights up when I boot up about half of the time. The other half I have to unplug and replug and then it's fine. No problem. Oh, well.
