I note that after using USB Memory Sticks (various capacity size) for a considerable time, the metal part apparently feels rather hot to the touch. As of interest, is this normal practise for USB Memory Sticks? Unlike hard drives, USB MS have no movig parts within the plastic casing. Comments most appreciated.

There are no moving parts inside a CPU (Central Processing Unit) either. However, most get so hot that if they don't have at the very least a large heat sink, they will literally melt themselves.

    Flowing electricity generates heat.

SpyWareDr, Yes I am aware that any component using electricity will become heated after user time due to friction. Taking this fact, a USB MS could in theory burn itself out after considerable use, if it becomes over heated. Price wise, USB MS vary in cost and should be a main factor when choosing the brand, also considering the time factor for playback and saving. Reading your post, it is normal for USB MES to become reasonably hot.
