Troubleshooting for a friend who has Windows 98 (first edition).

Can I upgrade his system to Second Edition without much difficulty? I have the program CD for Windows 98 SE. Would there be any specific problems involved in doing this?

Will it overwrite existing system files and insert others or do I have to uninstall the current proram files before I load the new system?

As long as you have either the Full or UPGRADE and not the UPDATE version of SE it should do quite well.

It will overwrite system files while maintining existing program files.

But a couple of things. This is best accomplished by doing the following.

Before shutting down to install the upgrade set the Video back to a Standard VGA setup first. And restart window to make sure it is there. More than likely you will need new video drivers anyway.

Then Boot from power off state directly to a 98 Startup Disk. Change to the Win98 folder on the CD, type SETUP and just make sure that Windows goes back into the existing folder.

    For example

    D:\Win98\SETUP.

BUT. If you wish to do this to fix problems I would not recommend it. Problems will carry over along with the good stuff.
