Upgrade 95 to 98

We have 2computers with Win 98 and one with ME and one with 95. We would like to give the 95 to my grandson....just for his games, but note that some of the games require 98. How difficult is it to upgrade his computer to 98 and can be use our 98 discs?
We probably still have to upgrade this memory but we have done that before.

There are always reported problems with old system files and drivers that cause too many conflicts and crashes. You'll be sooo much happier with Win98 if you do a clean install. If you don't want to reformat your C: drive, you can just go into DOS and rename your C:\Windows folder - you will still need to reinstall all of your programs. See if there is someone who can make a Win98 Startup Disk for you before you start and test it to make sure it will install the drivers for your CD-ROM (just reboot with the floppy in your A: drive and choose Option #1, Start with CD-ROM support). You should also scan the disk with your antivirus before you use it. Be sure to back up everything on your C: drive that you want to save, like your mail, Favorites, Address Book, etc. You can also save your connectoids to your ISP if you open My Computer and double-click the Dial-Up Networking folder, you can open My Computer again and open it to where you want to save it, say your A: drive (you can fit several on a standard floppy) or you can make a file folder on another drive/partition and open it. Then you can just RIGHT-click drag-and-drop the connectoid and select "Copy Here ". When you install Win98, all you have to do is RIGHT-click drag-and-drop it into your Dial-Up Networking window and you'll have all of your settings and the phone number, you will just need to add your user name and password and connect and you're set! Totally reformatting your C: drive is what I recommend to make sure you have a fresh start. Even if you purchased the Win98 Upgrade version, you can just start the install normally and it will ask for verification that you qualify and you can insert your Win95 CD and browse to your CD-ROM drive, it will read it and when it continues, just put your Win98 CD back in. It should go very smoothly.

That is a complete and utter waste of time and disk space.

There is NOTHING in the old 95 that can be used in 98. Write the Dial up info on paper.

Either upgrade over top or format and clean install.

The 2nd choice is the best.

But I do agree with having a Win98 Startup Disk that works properly before doing anything. It can not only be used to boot the machine but format the HD etc.

Also if you are going to go with Win98, go for 98 Second Edition. 98 First edition is way, way out of date. It needs too much upgrading and patching to make it compatable with newer stuff.

95 to 98

THis is the first time I have seen this BBS as I was looking for help on a problem I had yesterday today when I attempted to upgrade from 95 to 98. I had a big problem because I did not use an upgrade but an original so I now cannot get on the Internet with that computer. ( I am using my other one on a hub.) I called my Internet service and he advised me now to purchase the 98 upgrade which he believes will solve my problem. He was unable to help me after trying for 25 minutes. (I was trying to upgrade because my Norton Anti Virus was going out of date and the new one I had worked only on 98 and above.)
