I have W2K Pro SP2 NTFS filing.I had IE 5.5 with all the updates installed.I also installed all the updates, critical and chosen recomended updates. The update page was working fine in that the scan for updates functioned properly. Then I upgraded to IE 6 and the scan for updates just locks the browser up.After a short interval the task manager pops up and I end task as the program is not responding.I have tried to uninstall and roll back to IE 5.5 but the uninstaller does not carry through. Can I uninstall IE 6 another way?Or is there another way of getting around this?My laptop is also running W2Kpro SP2 and IE 5.5 and the update scan works fine. :p ;) ..................Thanks .........Zipp

If you have your security settings too high (cookies and scripts mostly) the scan can certainly "fail ". Easiest for me was to add Microsoft to my Trusted Sites list which I have set to the lowest security possible. That way you can maintain a reasonable paranoia level with most web sites.

Also, the "task not running" isn't always telling the truth.

As for IE6 refusing to uninstall - try running a repair first.

IE6 may give the can't un-install message it the previous was not saved during the install.

I do not think the repair will fix that.

Well Newt I tried the trusted sites avenue and lowest settings for security.I have Tiny Personal for a firewall, and I was wondering if that software could have locked up IE6 while trying to scan for updates. Also just to let you know,I can manually download from the windows update catalog ok,but have to keep track of what is already on my system. Also when I downloaded IE6 a windows automatic update icon was placed in my control panel.I have configured this to warn when they are available. This is only for critical updates though.I believe this happened because I upgraded to IE6.I have tried to repair IE6 in case I had corrupted files but nothing. Microsoft is not to clear on how you uninstall IE6,can anone tell me of another site which knows?.......Thanks ZIPP51

With 2K, you have to have a recent (not sure which though) version of IE installed. It is so closely integrated with other parts of the OS that your system wouldn't work without it.

If you have 5.5 still there, then as BillyBob hinted, you should be able to back up to 5.5. If not, I don't know of any good way to do it short of a new install of 2K which will blow away most of your current settings.

You might try running this issue past the M$ tech support folks. They can be helpful with strange system problems. Since your basic issue is a problem with the auto-updates which is a supported feature from M$, the tech support should be no-cost for this one.

Thanks for the help.I rolled back to IE 5.5 from IE 6 but still has same problem. But actually my auto update is working fine and I can manually update the recommended selections. One day I'll format and reinstall.I tried getting help from M$ but they said they don't support the version of W2K Pro that I have.I don't understand that one,it's a genuine legal bought and payed for by me disk.

I take it is an OEM version of Windows you've got? i.e. it was bought as part of a package with a computer?

Part of the OEM agreement Windows has with the vendors of their OS's is that the support is handed over to the vendor instead of the producer (MS).

I believe this is because most of the larger OEM suppliers (such as Dell and Compaq) change the Windows installer to check for a valid machine, i.e. if it's not a Dell Computer you won't be able to install a Dell OEM Windows XP.

I'm not sure if it's OEM then, it says "to be distributed with a new pc only "So is the one I have the same as say a Dell?I build my own systems and I have always gone to other sources for help so I never realized that that was the case.I am always learning something as I build and upgrade computers. The only stupid questions are the ones that I don't ask.I don't get as frustrated over stuff like this I just backup and reformat .Thank you for the info.

The "to be distributed with a new pc only" is the same as saying it is an OEM product. However, I believe these versions of Windows are not product specific i.e. they won't complain if you install them on a no-name or home-built computer.

As a side note: OEM products (or at least OEM OS's) were originally only sold with complete systems, but there have been some changes so that you now can buy one with a cheap piece of hardware, say a power cable. One thing they have in common is that it is now officially the vendor which is supposed to provide the support for the operating system, or at least that's what my sources tell me.

(OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturers: It's a version of a software product to be used with the equipment it was sold with)

    Thanks Laage,

Come to think of it in order to get the discount price on the operating system I either bought a hard drive or motherboard.Hey I saved quite a bit of money,M$ made money plus doesn't have to deal with me for support and they get free advertising for their other products.I don't mind at all.But what about if I bought a copy at say Best Buy.Would Best Buy give me support?

I can't say for sure whether they will or not... I'm not in the US myself so this is info I've picked up from ppl "in the know ".

I doubt that Best Buy has a large support organisation for OEM products, but I may be wrong... but I'm pretty sure that the official line is that the vendor is the one responsible for supporting an OEM product.
