Have all critical Win98FE Critical updates and have IE6.0. If I use the update disk will I lose my more recent files or will I be given the option to keep the newer files. I really don't want to take a chance of things going wrong, but would like the networking features, the better USB support and also now many new applications require at least Win98SE.

    Thanks

Installing the upgrade should give you the option to keep newer file versions. Should is a very big word here, in the worst case you will have to use windows update to get all the new versions of your files. Since Micro$oft support for 98 is supposed to end on January 16, 2004 it is a good idea to visit the update site and save all the updates (93megs for me).

When everything is updated to your satisfaction, it is a good idea to run SFC (system file checker) and update you verification information, and make a backup copy of your update files.

Installed the Win98SE update and so far it works just fine, took less than 30 minutes, and so far the only problems were the shutdown(I had previously downloaded the patch),installed it and it solved the problem. The other problem is that the prompt to dial up my internet connection keeps coming up even though I may be already logged on. But, this was a problem sometimes prior to installing Win98SE, it has something to do with Norton Virus Scan 2003.

When I went to windows update after installing SE, I only needed two critical updates. There were about 4 recommended updates available. Also, I still have the latest versions of all of my applications installed.
