Update Reboot Failure

I have several systems and on an older one my daughter is using, she had the computer perform an auto-update from windows, running win2K. Unfortunately, she couldn't get it to reboot, I tried in safe mode, but the system just restarts and goes back to the startup menu again, and if I try to restart in normal mode, it just hangs forever. When I had errors like this on win98 and win95 I could just erase the sys.ini and win.ini files. Can I do that here, or will something else need to be done? Like most users, my daughter hasn't done a backup in awhile and we don't want to loose the HD to reformatting if it can be avoided. Win2K seems like such a different OS I'm afraid to do any tinkering. Especially since we can't find the cd's for the computer as we have moved several times since purchasing it. I thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

It seems that possibly the full up-date did not complete. So.... You may have to use the repair function in the W2k setup on the Original install Windows 2000 cdroms. Be carefull with this, as you should look at the Microsoft site as to how to run the repair. I have done it a number of times, not recently, so don't remember the steps.
There also could have been some kind of bug, spam, or virus which caused the problem. If you are not running a good up to date anti-virus, you are asking for these kinds of problems.

In any case, it appears to be a repair that is needed. You may not have to re-install anything, if the system can be fixed.

In addition: You may find a Linux based small os/system which will allow you to fix these problems. If you know where you need to go and what to do.

What I could suggest here is to boot to a system from the cdrom such as: Bart's PEBuilder .. You can find it here: nu2.nu/pebuilder .. This program/OS will let you boot from the Cdrom independent from using the installed Windows OS. It will let you access anything anywhere on the disk, free of any login whatsoever.
To make this you will need a setup disk for either XP or Windows 2003. It is free, and can save a lot of time. With this you may not need to use your repair from the original disks, if you can fix it otherwise.
Also can be used in tons of other ways, saving you and me a lot of time. You can put antivirus programs on the disk, and run them in the Os FROM the cd into memory and scan the disk. Also can be used to edit the registry, if you have an editor on the cd. It can do many other things as well.
