I am running WinMe and I want to update to IE6. I get the previous install message every time. I followed the instructions on the microsoft site( Re-name the wininit.ini file)-the problem is that my pc does not have the option to start in ms-dos ( it opens an ms-dos window) and my search function cannot locate the file called wininit.ini

Hi negativetrait - and Welcome to the Board :)

Would like to try and help you, but need a bit more info :
    Please expand on this.
Can you point me to the URL or Microsoft Knowledge Base Article No.?

I can't find it either on my Me installation - not too sure where DOS mode comes into it

Post back and we'll see what we can do :)

    Thanks for replying,
    http://www.WindowsBBS.com/showthread.php?threadid=21160&goto=newpost

This acrticle will describe the problem. The solution should be easybut never is... from what I can tell a good amount of people are having a similar problem.

Does your ME give you the option to restart in MS-DOS. The command needed to rename the wininit file will not work in an ms-dos window.

    Thanks for the help,matt

    Matt,

I don't actually run Me - I have my standby computer set up to triple boot to XP Pro, Win Me and Win 98SE mainly for trying out bits of software without compromising my main PC (XP Pro), but also to enable me to contribute to the board on more than one OS. BTW Me lasted 6 days on my main PC - nothing but trouble, but I know many folks who have no real problems with it :)

    To your problem :
    - NO.

But, if you have access to, or make, an Me startup disk and boot from that Shift + F5 gives you a command prompt, change to the Windows directory and run wininit.exe. My install does not have a wininit.ini

If your search in WE finds wininit.ini can you not rename as stated in KB 221863 ?

BTW all Knowledge Base articles have dropped the Q prefix - thus your link did not work, but I got there! Have you read the latest version dated 5/12/2003?

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;221863

Let us know if you make any progress.

    Hi matt ,PeteC

Generally speaking when a KB article suggests something in dos with windows me they mean boot with a startup disk then choose minimal boot.

In any case there is no need if you cant find the Wininit.ini
just to be sure search again ,copy paste this into search ?

for now if not complete comfortable in the registry leave it alone
It say's for win 2000 but that is the same place to look with win ME
    any pending ,
Delete any PendingFileRenameOperations values in this key.
thats in the right panel only, after of course backing it up

Fallow the bottom part of the article
after a fresh boot delete the contents of windows temp then
to Temporary Internet files and mark the popup to delete offline content. through control pane Internet options, or on IE;s toolbar.

I'm hoping you had nothing running when you first attempted the install and its not corrupt==== anyway ITS not a good idea to even get close to windows update for at least a few day's, with all these recent worms out there.

so maybe we can just run the install again.
Open the close program dialog box (press)ctlr alt del (at the same time)and stop everything except systray and explorer, its important to disable any virus protection though Ive never noticed any problems.do so anyway.
    navigate to
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer then on the toolbar go tools folder options , view, mark to show all hidden files and folders
    hit apply and OK .
create a folder in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer name it uninstall information2

    Look for a folder:
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information
select all right click and drag contents all the contents into the folder we created .so now the original is empty!

then try the ie6setup.exe again from the one in the windows directory(usually)C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files
if not there use the one in c:\windows update setup files
    double left click on ie6setup.exe
