I have an unknown file in my Documents and Settings sub folder. It is about 4 megs and shows up as a DVD media file called ntuser. There is also a smell text file called ntuser.dat.

I suspect it is some kind of infiltrater but I can't get rid of it. Whenever I try and delete it, it is rejected as it says it is in use by an application. I have tried to delete it in safe mode and even then it says it is in use by another application.

Can anyone advise if this file is supposed to be there and if not, how to get rid of it. It appears to have been created in August and gets updated fairly frequently.

:) LOL big time but your right it is an infiltrator. I bet your glad you couldn't delete it.

I'm not laughing at you but with you, I hope. We've all made similar bloopers a time or two.

Any question I would have is why is designated a dvd media type and why is it 4 mg in size, is this not an unusual size? Any takers????

Okay... spoke before I looked, mine is 3.5 give or take and I guess this would be based on my Profile Settings and Options. It may get larger or may get smaller based on what I do within my profile.

The extention is .dat Most probably he installed DVD software that associated the .dat type for itself.

That makes sense and it was so obvious and simple. Thanks Arie. I guess I've gotten a bit cynical and suspicious. I was looking for a more devious, devilish mine field or bomb.

What gets confusing with that ntuser file is that for some reason it seems to get associated with the Windows Media Player. I have the same situation. As Arie says, a software installation must wrongly associate that file.

Probably the DVD burner took over the dat files association. It matters not though since XP knows how to use it regardless.

As for deleting that file, you can't do it anyway. XP is all over that kind of protection.

At least these OS's are partially idiot proof. I certainly occasionally need that sort of protection.
