I just inherited a Compaq Presario 5000, AMD Duron CPU and Windows ME. It was operating erratically, slow to boot or exit. I thought it just needed reinstallation of OS. The previous owner had lost the ME disk, but I had a Win 2000 which I installed. I thought that it would overwrite ME, but it did not, so I have both Win ME and Win 2000 installed. Everything works fine on the Win 2000 side, but I would like to uninstall ME. However, when I select ME at start up it boots in "Selective Startup" mode which seems to be a bit more than safe mode, but lacks some features of normal mode. The most important lack seems to be the ability to uninstall ME. Can someone tell me how to get ME to load in Normal mode or how to uninstall ME by any means.
    Thanks.

It's been a while since I have had my hands on winme but it should also have msconfig. Boot into winme, of course, and type msconfig in the startbutton run line and hit enter. On the general tab you should have the usual startup options of Normal. selective or diagnostic. Put a check in normal. Reboot. Be aware that someone had used selective to disable some of those startup files on the startup tab. You may need to take steps to find out what those are and find a more permanent method of stopping these from loading at startup.

    see:
    http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/tips/winme/tswinme/whatismsconfig.htm

Are you up to date on all the updates and patches for winme offered by both microsoft and any hardware such as sound and video and any oem checks (if applicable). I also must add that you are courting disaster running this version of windows without the CD. Unlike what appears to be the general public's opinion, I always enjoyed winme and found it to be no problem after updating and tweaking. I thought of it as a cross between win98 and winxp. It sort of had a bit of both operating system features. I used the heck out of that CD while doing this.

I got off topic above and on a reread I see your main goal is to uninstall ME. I don't believe your going to be able to do this from within ME. Keep in mind that I don't know anything about windows 2000 but it would seem to me that you should of had the option to uninstall winme from within win2000. In any case, while looking up, I see that I have either been zapped from the win98 forum or I picked the wrong forum during a jump and have found myself here. The Normal/Selective directions are correct but as to the deletion of winme, I shall leave you in the capable hands of those more familiar and comfortable with winme. Obviously I haven't had enough coffee yet, this morning, or I wouldn't have gotten lost in the first place. Off for some more coffee and back to the forum I originally intended to be in.

    Good luck. :)

Thank you. Msconfig was the way to go. However, although I was able to choose a "normal" mode for startup, Windows refused to follow through. I clicked "apply" and "ok ", but on startup, it still reverted to the selective mode and that was selected when I returned to the config screen. I think that there were a lot of corrupted files in ME and that was the reason that the previous owner became so disgusted with the computer.
Anyway, I edited the boot.ini file in Win 2000, so that the choice of OS screen no longer displays and then just deleted the Windows folder. I think if I clean up the registry, there should be no further probs, right?
