One friend of mine deleted important e-mail messages suspecting a virus attach.
Is there any way to recover them?
The machine is working (Windows 98) and the IE - Outlook Express too.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

The chances are not good, especially if these files were deleted some time ago. It is more than likely that they have been overwritten on the disk as Windows sees a deleted file as free, available space.

I am assuming that your friend has emptied the Deleted Items folder or has that set to empty when OE closes down.

A search on the Board for 'undelete' brings up a host of hits some of which have links to recovery programs.

Good Luck - you will need it :)

The safest Undelete program is Restoration, which is small enough to download to a floppy.

As PeteC has said the more you write to the hard drive the lower the chances of recovering what has been deleted. Downloading a large Undelete program to the hard drive is just one more nail in the coffin.
However, is your friend sure she has deleted the messages?
Has she looked (using Find) to see if she still has a Deleted Itmes.dbx file? This can be read with DBXtract
    http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx
Another possibility, depending on her email service is that, if it is a web based service, the messages might just still be on the email service's server and she could access the messages from their web site.

    Thank you PeteC and Welshjim.
I have downloaded the Restoration program which does not find any .dbx file.
The Delete itms folder is empty.
I fear that the job to find something is hard.
Since the computer is a notebook I have redirected my friend to a professional company, available locally (ONTRACK).
    Thank you for your help.
    Regards
