    I am setting up a new Windows 2000 machine for a friend. I have installed Netscape 7.1 and it works fine if I dial in from the connection window, but I cannot get it to bring up the dialer on launch. IE starts the dialer but not Netscape. I installed Netscape 4.79 also to see if it would launch the dialer, but it does not. I have checked that proxy is set for direct connection and checked internet tools in IE to always dial the default connection.
    I have connected thru a lan connection using my cable account, but have disabled the NIC and even physically removed it trying to make the dialer launch. Not a huge problem, but definately an annoyance to have to shortcut the dialer and launch it first.
    Thanks for any help

    Welcome to the Forum, red.1!

    Hi Bob,

    I believe the following will address your issue. If not, post back and let us know:

    Windows 2000/XP: Autodialing

    In Windows 2000/XP the autodialing process is different from Win9x. In Win9x autodialing was set in Control Panel --> Internet Options --> Connections, but it's completely different in Windows 2000/XP.

    To force automatic dialing when a program such as Netscape requires a TCP/IP connection do the following:
    In Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Services, look for the following services:

    * Remote Access Connection Manager
    * Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
    * Telephony

    Set all those services to "automatic ". Now you can even set "Never dial a connection" in Internet options, the dial out process is independant to this option. You will notice that the interface for dialing out is different than the standard IE interface.

    For DSL:
    Disable TCP/IP for the DSL network card, since it only serves as a virtual modem for the DSL connection. If you have a LAN connected to your PC be careful not to deactivate TCP/IP for the local area network: If you have DSL and LAN you should have two network cards in your PC, one is for the DSL, the other for the LAN, so make sure you deactivate TCP/IP for the right card (the DSL card, for example "LAN Connection 1" or "LAN connection 2 ").

    Newest thing people can try is to add the following line to the user.js file:

    pref( "network.autodial-helper.enabled ", true);

    Thanks for the support, Ramona. It works so-so but I will keep a short cut to the connection on the dial-up. I am a tech in our local school system, and deal with W2K all day,however, we don't use dial-up. Thanks again

    WHERE do you add the following line:

    pref( "network.autodial-helper.enabled ", true);

    Hi vegaspat,

    Add the line to your user.js file. If you haven't created one, then I would suggest that you do so.

    Let us know if you have questions.

    Well, apparently I haven't created one since I can't locate the file you mentioned. What exactly am I looking for?

    And if I can't locate it, please tell me why and how to create one.

    What is it for?

    vegaspat,

    If you will click on the link in the above post, it will give you all the information you requested on the user.js file.

    Sorry, I wasn't paying more attention. For some reason I didn't realize it was a link.

    Thanks.
