Uable to connect IPhone

Recetly purchased an IPhone and bought a data plan to access Internet wireless. However, I am unable to do so. Yet my laptop does access wireless. I initially provided a password to access the Internet but won's accept it. Yet I am paying monthly on the data plan. Any suggestions as to the problems would surely help as to what the problem may be as AT&T cannot provide the answer as well the people who sold me the IPhone.
