Typing problems

In interent explorer AND system text boxes, at times my family and I are unable to type. The cursor appears, blinks normally, but the moment that a key is hit on the keyboard the cursor vanishes and the program or window freezes. After a moment or two a box comes up telling me an error has occured in Explorer/Internet Explorer and they program will be shut down. This doesnot not affect any other programs, such as MSN explorer. It would be appreciated if I can get a little help.

It's for IE 5 and since you posted in the XP section, I assume you have the IE6 that comes with XP but the fix is probably the same.
