Win XP, Linksys Router w/ Network, Earthlink DSL w/ PPPoE.
Average speed down 1200, 212 up.
Win Rec 511104, MTU at XP and Router 1492, MSS 1452, TTL 121
    1. Should MTU be same at router and XP? Is one of no consequence as other is Default?
    2. Will I gain anything by pinging, then changing settings?
    3. Should I install a packet that tweaks Registry ( I don't know how to manually tweak registry!)

The only way I know of to figure out which are the optimum settings for a particular installation is to download a file, make a change, download the file again and compare. But multiple goes at each since you need to see what is "usual" rather than the results from a single download.

Or use one of the online "speed testing" sites.

And yes do use a 3rd party reg tweaking program if you aren't familiar with or comfortable with making manual changes.

    BTW-
1200 Down and 212 Up are good numbers. I'd suggest leave it alone. Just my opinion.

Otherwise, visit DSLReport Broadband Tweaks for some real-world solutions/experiences.
