Trouble with Windows Update

When I go to Microsoft Windows Update it tells me that I need only protection update Mar 04 2002, but I am not able to complete download and installation. When download is at 2408 KB (complete download is 4957 KB) it stops, download windows disappears and I have the notice the installation was not done and to try again. I have tryied more than ten times, also in different days, allways with same result. It is very strange, I have never experienced something like.

Have you cleaned out your temp files? How about endtasking on everything but systray and explorer and your dial up (Assuming you're using it) before you do the download?

From another forum I had the suggestion to download Q319182 from Microsoft download site. I followed this suggestion, but when I try to do installation I receive this advice: "Before installing update you must install Internet Explorer 6.0. I have looked in IE ? and I have found: Version 6.0.2600.0000IC.
What can I do now?

Clean out your browser's history (see Daizy's post in this thread).

Run the IE Repair Tool (Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Information - Tools - Internet Explorer Repair Tool).

 

That's funny, when I go to Windows Update it tells me I need this update also, even though I already have the latest Microsoft VM version 3805 installed:

The March 4 2002 update IS the Microsoft VM Build 3805! To see if you really need it, here are the instructions to determine your Micirosoft VM version from the FAQS section of
MS 02-013

PS Regarding Q319182 that's the MS02-015: March 28, 2002 Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer which has been superceded. The LATEST cumulative patch for IE is the August 2002, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer (Q323759) Neither one, though, includes the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. Make sure you download te correct version of the IE cumulative patch for your version of Internet Explorer.

Why Microsoft tells us we need this Protection Update when we don't need it?
May be something is wrong in my PC.
Looking in C:\Programmi\Windows Update I have found file vuhistv3.log and reading it I see many times, may be one time for each failed attempt installing Protection Update Mar 04 2002:

"V3_2|3851|INSTALL|Aggiornamento della protezione, 4 marzo 2002|5,0,3805,0|2002-09-12 12:53:08|1|FAIL|0x80070002|Impossibile trovare il file specificato.| "

In english, (I try to translate it):

"V3_2|3851|INSTALL|Protection Update, Mar 04 2002|5,0,3805,0|2002-09-12 12:53:08|1|FAIL|0x80070002|it is impossible find specified file.| "

What file is missing?
My OS is Windows 98 SE

Did you go to Start, Run, and type COMMAND, then type JVIEW and enter? That will show you your Microsoft VM version. If ithe number on the first line already ends with 3805 then you do not need the March 4 2002 update.

If you have a version lower than 3805 then I would try Windows Update another time. Maybe the problem is with Windows Update, or maybe there are too many people trying to download the file.

It's not that strange for Windows Update not to work from time to time. Most likely there is nothing wrong with your PC. Since you don't need the March 4 2002 update I wouldn't worry too much.

 

For at least one person, installing the cumulative patch for IE6 (actually, Service Pack 1) has solved their Windows Update problems. The patch can be obtained from Windows Update ( ) and here:
