Hi Andreas...sorry to hear your having problems...

Noticed you don't have the latest version (1.98.2) of HijackThis. Download the latest version and run program. Post back a new log. Don't fix anything yet until someone experienced with the logs advises you to.

You should also download the latest version of CWShredder. Make sure you have close all windows before runing program. Start program...Click Fix.

While waiting if you have not run Ad-aware or Spybot you should do so. If you don't have them installed you can download them from the following links below. Make sure you update before running programs...
    Ad-Aware SE Personal
Spybot 1.3 - Tutorial can be found here . Only put checkmark on entries highlighted in RED.

You should also running an "Online" virus and Trojan scan...I have added some links for those also...
    RAV - AV Scanner
    Panda - AV Scanner
    Trojan Scan - Trojan scanner

I am not an expert for your HijackThis log so I cannot tell you what to fix but I'm pretty sure the C:\Windows\Internet Explorer\IEeng.exe is a "Nasty ". I'm sure someone with more experience will help soon.

Did you run Ad-Aware or Spybot? Did you run CWShredder? Did you run any of the Online Virus and Trojan scanners?

    Please post back. :)

If I remember correctly, find4u is a CWS variant.

Download and run CWSherdder v1.59 from here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html Pay attention to run instructions Readme.

Also please answer Kent's question about Ad-Aware and SpyBot and the CWSHredder. If you have not scanned with them, please do. If you have, then wait for Lonny or Dave.

    Afterwards - another log.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles...

You are correct...The site "find4u.net" is one of the sites that IE-SPYAD adds to "Restricted Sites ". I also believe that...

    F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\inetdata\services.exe <= Trojan? => http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojkrepperg.html

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime => according to...Pacman's Startup List that "QuickTime Task X qttasks.exe CoolWebSearch parasite related" is also. The list says that "QuickTime Task N Qttask.exe System Tray access to Apple's "Quick Time" viewer from version 5 onwards" is good

    And O17 - Lop.com domain hijacks

I think that he has a few more but like you said waitng for someone else...

    Hi there

Have run the various programs suggested.

Forgot to say that after the cleaning procedures last month, there are these two messages that pop up every time I start up the computer, saying:
"Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\inetdata\services.exe...' ", and
"Could not load or run 'C:\WINDOWS\inetdata\services.exe...' specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry." Is there something I could/should do about it?

You never did say if you have run scans with up-to-date Spybot (v1.3) and Ad-aware (new SE version). I know you mentioned running the suggested programs but nice to have specific confirmation.

First thing to do is make sure the copy of services.exe that was in \inetdata is really gone. It was dropped on you by theTroj/Krepper-G virus (at least that's the name Sophos uses). Careful though because there should be legit copies of the file on your PC but in different locations. The link has removal instructions in case you still have the critter.

Also another that behaves in much the same fashion is still on your PC. See This link for removing
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEeng.exe

Since both the above do nasty changes to the contents of your hosts file, I'd delete it. It won't hurt anything to have the file gone and you can easily create a clean copy later if you wish.

After doing the removals from the two links, run HJT again and get rid of any of the following that still show up.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://find4u.net/sp.htm
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://find4u.net/index.htm
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://find4u.net/index.htm
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://find4u.net/sp.htm
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://find4u.net/index.htm
    F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\inetdata\services.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottimeO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xp_system] C:\WINDOWS\inetdata\services.exe
    HKCU\..\Run: [xp_system] C:\WINDOWS\inetdata\services.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [IEengine] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEeng.exe

Note that the entry in green is legit but takes system resources and really doesn't need to be running at startup.

Is there a reason to have
    O15 - Trusted Zone: www.mt-download.com
in your trusted zone? What happens if it is not?

    Hi Newt...

    What about the => O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{56171456-2CC0-4BA8-B47B-7B394FC247B2}: NameServer = 195.67.199.39 195.67.199.40?

According to the HijackThis tutorial => O17 - Domain hijack
Domain hijacks always include an IP address, do a WHOIS on the IP address. If it comes up with a legitimate owner (like an ISP or college) leave it. Otherwise, fix these entries

I would leave that entry, a Whois comes up with an ISP in based in Sweden.

    Thanks Mark...

Just reading up on another HJT tutorial and it was mentioned to do a WHOIS on IP. So I did and came up with same info you came up with.

    195.67.199.39

SSL Cert: No valid SSL on this Host, Get Secure
    Cached Whois: Cached today
    Whois History: 3 records stored
    Record Type: IP Address
IP Location: Sweden - Ostergotlands Lan - Norrköping - Telia Network Services
Reverse IP: No websites hosted using this IP address

Oye, so much to learn... :)

    Hi there Newt

Yes, I've run scans with Spybot v1.3 and the latest Ad-aware.

Upon following your instructions, I'm now free from messages about inetdata\services.exe that kept popping up. Great!

Meanwhile, even though I've done the removals and HJT deletions as suggested, I still have problems when (1) turning off, as the computer insists there is a 'WinMin' program running, and (2) when restarting, as my homepage default switches to the 'find4u.net', even though that's what I got rid of when running the HJT.

Also I wonder if you suggest I get rid off the "O15 - Trusted Zone: www.mt-download.com "? I have no clue what it is or is for.

Below is my latest log, after having done the deletions on HJT and then rebooted:

I recommend you scan again with HJT and fix the following.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://find4u.net/sp.htm
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://find4u.net/index.htm
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://find4u.net/index.htm
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://find4u.net/sp.htm
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://find4u.net/index.htm
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [IEengine] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEeng.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: WinZip Quick Pick.lnk = C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE
    O15 - Trusted Zone: www.mt-download.com

Right click My Computer and choose properties. On system restore tab, check the box to turn off. OK out.

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and OK. Yes to restart. This will restart your computer in safe mode.

Now in safe mode, you will need to show hidden files and folders, as well as system files.

    Open CWShredder and click fix.
Open C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer and delete the file IEeng.exe.
Open C:\Temp if present, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and OK.
Open control panel>internet options>programs tab and click reset web settings button.
Uncheck the /safeboot box in msconfig and ok to reboot.

Back in Windows, you can re-enable system restore. Surf a bit then run another HijackThis scan and post the log.

    Hi there Noah

Followed your advice, and so far so good! The log below is taken after surfing for a while after having re-enabled system restore (i.e. after having fully completed the instructions). I hope things will be as fine when I reboot tomorrow morning again...:

Looks clean. Lets hope it stays that way. :)

If you haven't done so already, I recommend you open Spybot and click mode on the toolbar, then advanced mode. Click immunize in the left pane, then immunize again, this time from above with the green + beside it. Click the link below that for SpywareBlaster, download, install and update. Check for updates weekly.
    Then download and install IESpyad.

That will give you an added layer of protection against unwanted parasites.
