    Hi all,
I've been wrestling with a trojan for the past week or two, and have had absolutely no luck with removing it from my system.
I have scanned with AVG, Adaware, CWShredder and Spybot - all with current updates installed, and yet the trojan horse "collected.5.l" keeps appearing everytime I restart and rescan.
I have scanned from both user accounts with all four programs, have booted up in safe mode and scanned again from both user accounts. I have followed the steps mentioned on the AVG forum for cleaning an infected computer: http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?4,27725,backpage= (Which is fantastic by the way) and yet have still had zero success, the trojan keeps rearing it's ugly head.
I'm at my wits end, and would really appreciate any alternative suggestions. :(
    I'm currently running Windows XP.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS Snape :)

Please download HijackThis.exe from here. Save it to a permanent folder (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT). Open and click scan, then save log. Once it is saved it will open in notepad. Select all from the edit button, copy and paste the results here. Don't fix anything with it yet!

Also, please download MWAV. Save it to your desktop and double click to open. Check the boxes for Memory, Registry, Startup Folders, System Folders, Services, Drive, All Local Drives and Scan All Files, then click scan. When it completes, copy the lower window labled Virus Log Information and post it here.

Was the virus by chance located at C:\windows\system\MSDIRECTX.SYS?

Yes it was!! This is the file that keeps becoming infected, time and time and time again, regardless whether I clean, delete or quarintine it.
Thanks for the welcome. I'll do as you've instructed when I get home tonight.

K, I've performed the scans as you suggested. Only problem is, my computer won't allow me to run Hijackthis (along with various other programs, like Windows Task Manager) so I had to run Hijackthis after rebooting in safe mode - I hope this doesn't skew the results. Here they are:

Copy the contents of the quote box below to a blank notepad. Close it, saving to your desktop as

    File name: delfiles.bat
    Save As Type: All Files
Boot to safe mode. Click start>run and type services.msc then hit enter. Locate NT login service in the list, right click and select properties. The path to executable should be C:\WINDOWS\System32\libsysmgr.exe
Stop the service if running, then set to disabled. Click apply and OK out.

Double click the delfiles.bat to run.

Open HijackThis to the misc tools section, click the Delete an NT Service button, and type in ntlogin32 and click OK. Make very sure to type it properly!! Click the back button and do another scan. Place a check next to the following entries if present.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Compaq Service Drivers] systeminfos.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NT Logging Service] syslog32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Compaq Service Drivers] systeminfos.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft System Checkup] libsysmgr.exe
    O23 - Service: NT login service (ntlogin32) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\libsysmgr.exe (file missing)

Close HijackThis. Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete. Open My Computer, right click local Disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and click OK. Wait for it to complete and reboot back into Windows. See if you can run HijackThis and post a new log.

I followed all of your instructions to the letter Noahdfear. Was I supposed to do anything with these files once I selected them? I just closed HijackThis after selecting them, as you directed. I was able to scan with HijackThis with a regular bootup, here are the results:

I see now that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. You will need to go into Spybot and turn that off before fixing.

Glad to hear it. I still recommend you post a new HijackThis log. There are some other things that need tending to also, which we can do once I feel sure you're clean.

Your log appears to be clean, but your machine is way behind on Windows Updates, leaving it exposed to many vulnerabilities that patches have been issued for. I recommend you first turn off system restore, then turn it back on and create a manual restore point, then go to Windows Update and accept all crtical updates offered (Express Install). Reboot when promted and go back, until there are no more offered.

Also, if you haven't already done so, I recommend you download and install SpywareBlaster. Enable all protections, check for updates and enable them too. Then download IESpyad.exe, double click to extract (it extracts to C:\IESpyad by default), open the folder, double click the ie-ads.reg file and allow it to merge into the registry. That will give you some added layers of protection against unwanted parasites.

Will do, Noahdfear. It's weird that the log says that I haven't updated in a while, as I'm certain that I update this at least every couple of months (I don't use internet access very often on my desktop, but when I do I make sure to update everything). Thanks for those other suggestions as well, I'll download those and put them on my computer tonight.
    :)
