Toshiba software modem

I have a friend who dropped off his laptop. His modem seems to be working fine according to the device manager in windows, but when I tried to call up his dialup connection, I get an error saying that the port is already in use. I tried changing ports from com3 to com2 & com1, but got the same error. It is a Toshiba A25-S307 with XP.

If the MS article that Sparrow gave you doesn't help, try uninstalling it from the device manager and let windows redetect and install it again. You may need to uninstall the com ports as well in case of port problems, also may have a dead Modem. I have a fairly new Toshiba M30 laptop. Centrino 1.6. The modem front end went faulty, but was reported as OK when I asked windows to query it. Problem was, to get it replaced under warranty I had to use the Toshiba restore disks to rule out a software problem, which meant a few days updating and reconfiguring after the restore. The Modem was replace under warranty. Here in AUS there have been a few front end Modem faults with this particular Modem. Other than that the Toshiba laptop is great, apart from the 4200 RPM hard drive.

Looks like Paul was right. I gave it back to him this morning. I also found out that it was still under warranty. Thanx anyway guys.
