Hi all. its time for me to upgrade my old athalon 64 x2 6000+. only thing is ill have to upgrade motherboards to fit any sort of new processor. Ive got a dell inspiron 531 wits its original mobo. since its a mini tower i was thinking about getiing a bigger ATX tower to suit as well.

Was budgeting around £200 for all but will have to see how things price up. Ive peeked at a few CPU's and was thinking about the Phenom II x4 960T or similar (955, 840 maybe) but am really open to suggestions. And of course a mobo to suit. Ive got a BFG gts 250 (and yes i know they aren't making gpu's anymore) and was thinking about running it in sli (saw some cheap used ones on ebay) so if ppl think its worth it id have to get a sli ready mobo. Also i saw some fairly cheap cases on ebay :)

If ppl convince me that i dont really need to get a bigger case (worried about heat tbh) then maybe

Oh almost forgot ill have to get some new ram (4GB i guess as i run 32 bit vista) as the 3GB i have in the dell is DDR2 pc-5300.

I know it prolly alot for the budget but ive seen some bundles but without the sli option so any advice would be much appreciated. And remember none of this is set in stone, im fully open to new ideas if ppl know a better processor etc...:)

hmm just remembered one more thing. My OCZ PSU has 2 connectors for the GPU (8 pin i think) but the card uses both. If i was to run sli are the adapters out there that can change one of the other adapters i dont use to a 8 pin?? if not i guess i wont need a sli mobo...

Erm, what was the question again?

Probably best to wait a few month and buy a MB/CPU package.

FWIW switch to a 64 bit OS, modern games aren't keen on 3-3.5GB RAM

Never was a fan of them mini-towers. Not enough breathing room for air flow.

@wildfire. Ye sorry. There was a lot of info on the post. Was just looking for some input on what ppl think of the CPU for gaming and also any mobo ideas. Also if I should bother running the gfx card in sli or not.

Do I need to to a full install for 64 bit OS?? I have been unable to find any 'upgrade' info so not sure if it's poss or not. Also why wait a few months to get a bundle?? New years sales maybe??

That's exactly what I was worried about MrBill. My mini tower gets hot enough as it is,especially the GPU. Which is a shame as the link above seems quite a nice bundle bit is mATX
