    Can anyone tell me the most effective, and cheapest way to once and for all get rid of the pop-up messages in NS7. I hope you don't tell me it's www.messageblocker.com because they seem to be the worst offender, and I'd hat to pay them to end all the misery they've sent my way. In fact, they probably send 80% of the msgs that I get. Them and some desperate, lonely chick named Jennifer wanting to show herself on her webcam...FOR FREE EVEN!

    Thanks,
    George

    Hi George,

    Do you have your Popup Manager configured? Maybe I'm not understanding what you are describing, but if you have blocked popups, then none should be getting through. I just went to the site you referenced and experienced no popup ads. Turned off popup blocking, and wow!

    If you are using Version 7.0, then you really should consider upgrading to 7.02, or perhaps wait for Version 7.1, which will be released very soon.

    Popup Window Controls was introduced in Netscape 7.01, but there are scripts available for 7.0, which do basically the same thing, only a lot more inconvenient.

    Ramona :D

    P.S. Jennifer has no shame! ;)

    Are these regular popups, or more like IM-type spam?
    In any event if you have a popup blocker, you will need an URL or more simply a domain.
    As Ramona said, with 7.02 I have not see any popups which i do not request as an exception.
    But, I was thinking more of a Windows Messanger that may have been popping up. Is that in Win XP?

    If you're running Netscape 7.0 and would rather not install a newer version of Netscape just to get a popup-stopper, then look here:
    http://www.holgermetzger.de/restore.html

    "Full access to Script & Windows (the so-called Pop-up blocker)" means that you will get the option in Netscape using Edit Preferences, Advanced, Scripts and Windows to UNcheck "open unrequested windows ". That's the popup-stopper feature in Mozilla that was left out of Netscape 7.0

    Also like Westside mentions, if you're running Windows XP (I'm not sure about Win2000 or NT) then some popups might be due to the Messenger Service. You can disable that as follows, which I found from the last link on this thread:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10069

    * Under Control Panel, select Administrative Tools.
    * Select Services.
    * Double-click on Messenger.
    * In the Messenger Properties window, select Stop, then choose Disable as the Startup Type.
    * Click OK.

    Hi George,

    Holger's "Restore" includes much more than a popup blocker:
    * Disables Activation
    * Full access to the Imageblocker
    * Plaintext tags (*bold*, /italic/, _underline_) in MailNews.
    * Disables Javascript/Cookies/remote images/plugins in Mailnews
    * Disables the "Fake Account" (Netscape.net account) in the MailNews tree view (if you don't have one...)

    The Netscape Champions have asked that all Netscape users register their browser, altho at this point, not sure how much good that will do. ;) With Activation disabled, that would not be an option within the browser.

    You can add this single script to your prefs.js file, or your user.js file (if you have created one) which will disable popups.

    user_pref( "dom.disable_open_during_load ", true);

    However, I still recommend upgrading the browser to users who run 7.0 for the below reasons, which are outlined in the Release Notes:

    Netscape 7.02
    * Enhanced security
    * Improved stability
    * New Macromedia® Flash 6 r65 plugin for Windows
    * New Java 1.4.0_03 plugin for Windows

    Netscape 7.01
    * Popup Window Controls let you suppress pop-up ads when browsing. In Preferences, double-click the Privacy & Security category and choose Popup Window Controls.

    * Home Page Group feature lets you automatically open several of your favorite pages as tabs when starting Netscape. After opening two or more pages, open the Edit menu and choose Preferences. Click "Use Current Group" in the Navigator preference panel.

    * New AOL Mail features let you unsend mail, check message status, and keep messages marked as new.

    * COPPA Compliance and improved security including greater control of certificates.

    As you can see, there are security enhancements, tabbed browsing, newer Java, and with the release of Version 7.1, even more improvements.

    As an aside, there is now a folder for Version 7.1 on the Netscape FTP site, so that Release is imminent.

    Your Windows Messaging issue, I leave in more knowledgeable hands.

    Ramona :D

    NS7.1 Base ver. vs. Full

    Ramona,

    Thanks for your help again with this issue. I went to the NS FTP site and dug down to this level:
    ftp://ftp.netscape.com./pub/netscape7/english/7.1/windows/win32/sea/
    I'm fairly sure of what's in the Full (AOL, Real Player, etc..), but if the Base will give me just the Communicator module, I'd be happy with that. Could you elaborate on that pls.

    Thanks,
    George

    Hi George,

    While waiting for a reply, you can look through the links on the "official" download page for Netscape 7.1
    http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/download.jsp

    PS According to http://wp.netscape.com/download/full_install.html
    the netscape.com/pub/netscape7/english/7.1/windows/win32/sea/NSSetup-Base.exe
    link is Navigator Only which I would assume is for the browser, no Mail or add-ons, but maybe not: see http://sillydog.org/narchive/sd/71.html

    Maybe someone else can confirm that for you.

    Hi George,

    The Base install includes Mail & Newsgroups + Spellchecker, but with the Custom install, you can opt out of the features.

    The SillyDog701 Stand Alone Release page also lists a comparison chart, which I'm sure you have seen by now.

    You might also take a look at the Compact Release by Holger Metzger. It too gives you the option, with a Custom install, to opt out of Mail & Newsgroups. See the comparison chart near the end of the page.

    If you have further questions post back.

    George,

    I lied! :eek:
    The Base install includes Mail & Newsgroups + Spellchecker, but with the Custom install, you can opt out of the features.

    Not true of Netscape 7.1. According to reports on the Netscape 7 Newsgroups, users were advised that this version does not contain the mail component. I'm downloading it now, so I can confirm this for my own information.

    Ramona :D

    EDIT: The "Custom" install offers two options:
    Navigator
    Spellchecker

    NO Mail component. Now why would you need a spellchecker with no Mail? Things that make you go hmm... :confused:

    Maybe, if you do an install of 7.1 over 7.0x it will replace the Navigator portion but you will still have the 7.0x Mail component, and you could use the new Spellchecker with that?

    Just a guess :)
