Is anyone using that new version of Kerio firewall (the one you have to pay for)? What makes it so much better than the current free version I'm running, which keeps out the bad stuff just fine?

The current version of Kerio reverts to a 'free' version after 30 days if you don't pay up and works just fine - for me at least.

The 'lost' functionality after the 30 day trial is Web Filtering, most of which can be done with a pop up blocker (I use Google toolbar) and by setting up IE as tight as the proverbial.

AFAIK the old version 2 (?) has some form of web filtering and is preferred by some, who will no doubt post :)

I use Firefox, so I have builtin Web filtering. Aside from that, is there anything to be gained from upgrading to 4.0? Does it detect and stop some kind of new threat that the old one can't? I honestly don't see the value of upgrading firewalls since all they do is stop in and outbound traffic. It's not like an a/v program that needs to be updated and upgraded to stay current. The threat is always the same for a firewall.

    Hi Shadowhawk,

I basically agree with your point that the firewall capability in free versions aren't any different than in the paid versions. This is true with the two Firewalls I use - Sygate and ZoneAlarm. BTW, I use the free Sygate and the pro ZoneAlarm on XP and WinMe repectively.

I don't aggree with *The threat is always the same for a firewall*. Over time, firewall threats do change, and whether free or paid, firewalls have to meet those changes.

    Regards - Charles

Just the same, I'll put off upgrading til I absolutely must. I'm sure my Kerio can withstand threats from Sasser and its ilk.

How do you know when you've reached that point?

When someone else posts that something got past their Kerio.

edit: Bah, changed my mind and installed the new one. Does the little red symbol in front of the shield mean it's online or that I'm being attacked? The old one had a green light that would go on in front of the shield, but would sometimes turn red, I assume when I was being scanned.

Look carefully - there is a red & green light - in/out or vice versa.

Oooooo yeah, I saw that. Just like in ZA. Now I could just figure out which color means which. Help files are so useless.
