I am assisting one who needs to enable access to the C:\System Volume Information directory.

XPH does not have the simple file sharing nor does it have the security tab. I know how to enable the access on XP Pro NTFS/FAT32 and XP Home FAT32, but not XP Home NTFS.

    Hi, Bruce,
It´s very simple: just go to the folder, rightclick the hidden "_restore{....} "-file and click explore. the folder then opens and shows all sub-folders with the restore points.
Hope this is what you were looking for.
    Best regards
    Werner

    Hi, Werner ~

You described accesing the folder which is what is attempting to be accomplished - access denied.

I know how to enable the access on XP Pro NTFS/FAT32 and XP Home FAT32, but not XP Home NTFS.

    Hi, Bruce,
sorry, I forgot to mention that I´m the administrator on my comp and, as such, have the rights to access anything on it. You may have to change settings in User Accounts.
    I´m running XP Home w/NTFS.

    Regards,
    Werner

Hi Bruce, I just tried accessing the "System Volume Information" on my XP Pro box as Admin and got access denied also; if you were to boot off the CD into the "recovery console" and do an
attrib -r -s -h "System Volume Information" you may be able get inside. :)

@Werner ~ Always and only run w/ Admin Privs. By default you are not granted access to SysVol directories in any version of XP at any privilege level.

@Clear ~ It is easy to get past in XP Pro, but in the Home version it is protected further from the users' own dangerousness ;) I haven't access to the machine 'til next week, but plan to try the attributes you mentioned or the CALCS command with the cacls /E /G + username switches at the command line.

    Hi

Not sure if this is another way to try :

There are two ways to change it's permission in XP Home Ed.:

    1. using the cacls command line in cmd.
    2. go to Safe Mode, login under the root admin account, then go to the folder and R click and access the security settings. (The security tab is already there in XP Pro in normal mode.)

I know someone who does this using the cacls command.

This may be just the same as already posted but in a slightly different way

For the sake of others as this method applies only to XP Home NTFS, this was how I was able to gain full control permissions/access under to the System Volume Information folder:
    • 'Start' > 'Run' > enter cmd > 'OK'
    • At the command line, enter cd C:\ > Enter
    • Enter cacls "driveletter:\System Volume Information" /E /G username:F > Enter
Be sure to include all quotation marks and spaces as indicated.

    Thanks for the information.

For future reference and for any others needing to do similar, XP-home has security tabs that only display when the PC is booted to safe mode. Normal mode and they simply aren't available.
