After a recent upgrade to XP from ME I find that System Restore
no longer works. The program opens but doesn't create restore points either automatically or manualy. Any thoughts?

Try running SFC.EXE /SCANNOW from the command line within Windows. You may get lucky and it'll fix the fault.

Has it ever worked since you first upgraded? It's maybe the old story of bringing trouble along when you upgrade without dumping the old system first.

Try disabling and then enabling System Restore.

If charlesvar's suggestion didn't help either, I can't give you much hope for repairing that without a lot of effort.

If you revert back to ME and the System Restore works there, then you could try backing up your user data to a different media and doing a drive format. (I'm assuming you have an ME install disk to insert when asked for proof of previous version) Then do a clean install of XP, reinstall all you software and restore your user data. (What's the matter with me, you can do all that without reverting. :) )

I don't think you wanted the hear all that and are still wishing for an easy fix. I can't blame you, I'd stew quit a while before I went to that much trouble.

I'll continue to research the problem and others may also drop in with some inspiration, so stay tuned and hope.

    Regards.
ps, Try running the error correction program that XP offers in System Tools, can't hurt. (it's the old chkdsk dos program in disguise) Tag the box to allow it to repair errors and reboot when asked, so it can run.

Once again thank you Zephyr. I will have to consider your suggestions before attacking as you suggested. If I have any luck with either of your suggestions I will get back to you.

charesvar's suggestion was inefective as well.
