Probably a corrupt Restore Point. Leave it alone for now if you are having other problems. Reboot and immediately after the POST screen fades, press the f8 key repeatedly until you see the Windows Advanced Options Menu. Select to boot the last know good configuration and see if your troubles are cured. If so, open System Restore and disable it. OK any warnings. Then enable it anew and it will likely work as well as it ever did although you will have lost all of the old RP's.

    Stystem Restore Inconsistent Results

What results do users generally get from the System Restore utility in xp ?
I find that it is very overrated and inconsistent.
More often than not it reports "that no changes have been made" even when you try all the restore points available.

I have never had a problem with System Restore - it has always worked perfectly for me - crosses fingers & touches wood :)

    Take a look at GoBack

You could also consider a disk imaging program such as Acronis or Norton Ghost, but these are not the equivalent of System Restore.

I second the recommendation of GoBack. It's the best investment in software that I ever made. I have used from Win95 through XP. A big bacon saver with little downside. I couple it with Acronis True Image daily incremental backup images and operate fearlessly.

    I keep System Restore disabled.

I have tried Goback but am not too familiar with it, it seems to go back a few hours not days, do you know how do I go back to any date I want. Thanks.

GoBack can return the drive to any condition that is within the limits of it's assigned History Cache. If you installed it with the default values, the cache will be 4 gigs on most larger drives (that's the max allowed). If you don't have that much free space, GoBack will allot 25% of what is available. Less History Cache means less reach backward in time.

Mine is 4 gigs and I get roughly 14 days of history under normal operating conditions. It depends on how much drive activity I have.

That's why I use it in conjunction with True Image. GoBack is great for the short term but TI is for the longer term. It only takes 4 minutes daily to make the TI incremental image and it only amounts to +- 80 megs. I can easily hold a years worth of them on my 60 gig secondary drive with plenty of room for other stuff.

Best deal yet, Acronis True Image ver, 7 is available for FREE.

    Free AcronisTrueImage7

I picked mine up last month. It works great! I was used to my older ver6, this ver. 7 is much better. It's still old since ver.9 is now out but I don't see the need in my case.

Getting the free download serial number is a bit circuitous so I'll post the link that helped me figure it out. Just read through this thread below:
