I get System Lockup on my oldest computer. When this happens, everything stops. Mouse curser, Applications, Windows Task Manager, and any other thing that is operating. I also get 100% cpu usage a lot. Lockup does not seem to happen when that happens. Just moving the mouse seems to hold off Lockup. Lockup does not happen in Safe Mode. I have tried to Repair WinXP, but that has not helped.

Hi Wahlroot, I'm just browsing the forums and see you are experiencing a problem that I had. My PC would do exactly what your's is. For no rhyme or reason it would suddenly stop/freeze/lockup. I can' remember where I saw this suggestion but I thought what the hell can't do any damage that can't be remedied. The forum I was in had something to do with slow PC or freeze, and the Idea is to stop "Client for Microsoft Networks" from working in the background as it gobbles up CPU and shows as 100% CPU. I disabled "Client for Microsoft Networks" and my PC has been working sweetly for 3 days now and CPU in Task Manager (Performance) it's currently varying between 4%--11%. PC seems to start up a little quicker and like I said you can always enable it again if necessary. My PC is self built with 2600AMD CPU and 1.5gig RAM and 80G HDD. Hope this will help. Neil.:)

With a great deal of respect, both posters above should follow the steps outlined and post to the malware subforum:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/forumdisplay.php?f=41

Client for Microsoft networks would not be responsible for 100% CPU usage unless some application behind your back (so to say) was using the service. In in this case it was likely malware.

When I can get back on the computer, I will try to stop "Client for Microsoft Networks ". I think I need it for my network. Since I Formated my hard drive and reinstalled WinXP, I do not think It now has Malware, Virus or other Junk. Each time I installed Apps, it got worse. First McAfee Firewall, Antivir Guard, and the Wireless Card, installed in that order. I installed the latest Updates to Antivir Guard from my other couputer before installing Wireless Card. It stays at %100 CPU most of the time. Even at Bootup (takes what seems like forever). Still does not happen on Safe Mode. Since those Apps have been installed on the computer for years, using the same setups, I am thinking of something else. I have not a clue what else.

    Hi wahlroot,

Even though you have been using the same programs for years, I doubt that they are the same versions.

What process/app is utilizing the most CPU in TM?

The re install of XP - is this with SP2?

    Is XP's firewall disabled?

The first suspect if you're sure its not malware is McAfee itself, or conflicting with Antivir Guard, or with something else.

Have you tried disabling McAffee and enabling XP's firewall for the nonce?

    Regards - Charles

Hey there charlesvar. We have WinXP SP2. Windows Firewall is Disabled, and always has been. The Process using the most CPU seems to be Explorer.exe, whether or not I am doing anything on the computer. The same programs are used on both of our computers, except There is no Wireless Card on the newer one, just Ethernet, to the Wireless Router. No lockup there. There is no Antivirus on McAfee. Today I did a full Format of the Hard Drive and reinstalled WinXP Sp2, Firewall, Antivir, and Wireless Card. Was able to get on the web long enough to tell Microsoft that I am Back. I have now disabled these Apps. Everything seems to work fine. As I was setting up the Wireless Card, I noticed there was something in there about a Firewall. Do not know how to turn it off, or if it would necessary. I did Disable McAfee, before I Disabled the Wireless Card, but it did not seem to make any difference. This is a D-Link Wireless router, and Desktop Wireless Card.
