In the Quick Launch Bar is an icon called "switch between windows ". Obviously it makes opened programs switch into a different appearance on the screen. Can anyone tell me what the purpose of this is, because I cannot see one. As soon as you click on anything the screen goes back to its normal appearance. Perhaps I am missing something?

No, that is not the function. "Switch between windows" is also called "Windows Flip 3D ". It gives you a slightly better overview of your running windows, and you can use the mouse to click on any window in the 'stack' to switch back to a normal desktop view with the window you selected brought to the front.

Yes - understood, Arie, but is there a possibility to keep the "Windows Flip 3D" on the desktop at all times rather than having the running windows all stacked behind each other?

You can always just click on the apps in the task bar.

Thanks Fang, I think you are right on the money.
The way I see it is that in order to use the Windows Flip 3d function, you have to click on its button in quick launch first and then with a second click on the program window you want to have in the front. Whats the point in doing all that when you can click on the taskbar just once to get your desired window? An utterly useless feature in my view.
Thanks everyone for your kind responses.
    Cheers Axel
