I've been referred to Windows to free additional memory through increasing the size of my swap file. How do I change the swap file settings in Windows XP?

I've never done anything like this, so I need help.

    Thanx.

    Hi Klanger,
I am not sure what your hoping to accomplish but I think I'm detecting a little disappointment in the answer you received after all you were referred to our bbs and rightfully so. While the link will answer your question, it may not fully address your issue or desired goal. May I suggest that you spend just a wee bit of your free time going through our "xp forum" and possibly the "general forum" Archives. They are chalked full of past discussions, debates, explanations and suggestions on swapfile, ram, rom and resource "need to's" "don't need to's" and "how to's ". Most from very knowledgeable and qualified members. I think the reluctance of going in depth into this topic is because of the frequency it has been seen and discussed in the past. Keep in mind that, after doing so, should you have any problems understanding anything you've read or need something further explained, members will be glad to help fill in the holes. Pull up a chair and stay a while, I think you'll be happy you did. :)

    Hello KLanger,

    Where it is:

    Right click My Computer
    Properties
    Advanced tab
    Performance
    Setting bar
    Advanced tab
    Virtual Memory
    Change bar

How much physical RAM do you have? What are the numbers for the swap file, also known as the page file and virtual memory?

    Regards - Charles

Actually, the answer depends on why you want to do this. Are you receiving error messages about virtual memory? Do you have issues with not having enough physical RAM on your system? Are you just curious and want to wring extra performance out of your system?

As Ann mentioned earlier, there are lot's of other topics that address this exact scenario - but "customizing" it to fit your needs will require some more specifics.

FWIW, there are many different opinions on how this should be done - so there's no "right" answer for all situations. It ends up being "whatever works best for you ".
