Hi, bigad21. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

Yes, it is normal to have several instances of svchost.exe listed in Task Manager. I also currently have six instances of svchost.exe listed in my Task Manager.

It is normal, as Svchost.Exe is a host for running window services, or in another way, a program that wears many hats.
It is when Svchost.exe is running out of any other folder than the Windows\System32 folder when something is amiss.

Easy enough to see what the Svchosts are running

Open a cmd prompt and type

    tasklist.exe /svc

    or

Copy and Paste the below line into the CMD prompt. It will create a file Tasklist.txt on your desktop to see these items for copying and pasting back to us if something unusual is there.

    %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c %windir%\system32\tasklist.exe /svc > "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop\Tasklist.txt

bigad21, I think tasklist.exe is included with Windows XP Professional but not with Windows XP Home.

If you are using Windows XP Home, then do the following.

    1. Go to http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/tasklist.zip to download tasklist.zip.
    2. Extract tasklist.exe from the zip file and place it in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder (assuming you have Windows installed in your C:\ drive).
Then you should be able to use the tasklist.exe program as specified in the Wikipedia Info link I provided above and as Mike specified above.
