I am not experienced at this, but I suspect 2 entries as potential troublemakers for my system. Please note the following log, and your special attention to:

    C:\Program Files\strCodec\isamonitor.exe
    C:\Program Files\strCodec\isamini.exe

I suspect these 2 items are causing pop-ups and redirecting to a web page called theuptodatesafety.com. Both appear in my process list, but I am unable to end them, nor am I able to manually delete the folder "strCodec" that contain the two ".exe" files.

Norton does not detect any viruses in my system. Have run both AdAware and SpyBot and deleted everything they have recommended, but neither has caught this.

    Can anybody help me??

Thank You Very Much (in advance)!!!!!!

    Hi BigBadRadDad.

This is one of the many SmithFraud\Zlob infections. Please follow directions for the first part of the fix.

    Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter "; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool "; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore you may get an alert.

Now for the second part of the fix:

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site. Please follow the instructions exactly in the order listed; this is very important!

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido Anti-Malware:
    1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu ".
    2. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found! ". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
    3. From the main Ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
    4. After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful "
    5. Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ? "; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter ".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

AFTER SmitfraudFix finishes (and after a reboot if required), please open Ewido. (If a reboot is required, please boot BACK into Safe Mode.)
    • Click on Scanner
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "Remove" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop
    • Close Ewido
Then please restart it into Normal Windows. Please post the contents of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt into this thread, along with the Ewido report and a new HijackThis log.

    Hey Te,

In my attempt to follow your course of action verbatim, a couple of interesting things have surfaced.

#1 During 1 of my reboots, Norton detected and deleted a virus named "Trojan.Vundo ". located at C:\windows\system32\amspebhi.dll. Although I can't be sure, this seems to have had a positive effect in that
"isamonitor.exe" and "isamini.exe" are not showing up in my process list any longer and the "uptodatesafety.com" web page is not being displayed everytime I click on IE, instead of my homepage (Google). Perhaps you know whether or not the deletion of this virus may have been responsible for these effects. However, in my sytem tray, I continue to have an undesired icon that displays a pop-up every 60 seconds or so about critical system error, viruses detected, blah blah blah.

#2 In your detailed instructions, I am to reboot into "safe mode ". Unfortunately, I am unable to do so. All goes fine, until it is time for my desktop to display. It displays for approx. 2 seconds (in safe mode) and then disappears, leaving me with only the black screen with safe mode appearing in all four corners. I know this is probably a whole separate issue from the one your are graciously helping me with, so my question is....Can I safely proceed with your course of action, without being in safe mode?

    Once Again, TYVM!

If you cannot get to safe mode a normal mode scan should suffice.
