I'm running a dell 1.7ghz 512 ram 60GB HD w/ win2k pro. The system has been running fine for about 5 months. Recently I've had trouble after restarting. The computer will load windows fine but when its done and I try to do anything it will just not respond. For example, trying to click on a shortcut. Trying to restart from this point is a problem too. Task manager will pop up (after quite some time) and will close each program one by one. When it finishes the computer wont restart or shutdown, it just sits in windows. The only remedy for this is turning my computer off and on 3 times using the power button on the case...which I HATE to do. Please help, this problem is really a pain in the butt.

Boot to safe mode, and see if the system shuts down normally there.
If it does, boot to safe mode again and create another user account, and reboot normally. Logon with that new account and see if the system works normally. If so, I would suspect a currupted user profile.
If not, I would check system programs that are starting on boot, "Startup Group ", "run key" in the registry, etc.
