Is there a significant power saving in standby. I heard that there is so little power used it can be compared to a VCR that is not playing anything OR an electric clock

Significant - no, I would not think so - just set your monitor - the largest source of power consumption to go into standby mode after, say, 10 mins.

I have read that standby mode can create some problems - I never use it.

I'm using an 17" LCD monitor and I dont think that uses a lot of power.

Is the computer itself using much power on standby vs. total on

From Help and Support > Standby :

"Standby is a state in which your monitor and hard disks turn off, so that your computer uses less power. When you want to use the computer again, it comes out of standby quickly, and your desktop is restored exactly as you left it. Use standby to save power when you will be away from the computer for a short time while working. Because Standby does not save your desktop state to disk, a power failure while on Standby can cause you to lose unsaved information "

Explanation of other Power Options there too.
