i looked at a couple reviews and honestly kas is way down on the list. what leads you to go to them ??? what have you seen that makes them better than say za internet security 2006. which i believe is the way im leaning to.

i agree suites seem to be the thing for my clients as well. only one app. to worry about.

actually i dont know much about za's new antivirus sft. i really like their firewall and have never had a problem with it. only 29.00 to upgrade and get both not bad price. personally i like bitdefenders antivirus in fact the whole package is good and user friendly.

but one icon in the tray i guess is easier to worry about.

whiskeyman - will install it and see how i like it.

    thanks all.

Over time in my following computer security issues, I've come to the conclusion that KAV AV is probably the best and was among the first on the road in having the AV expand it's function to include malware in it's wider sense, not just viruses.

I like ZA - I use ZAP as one of my firewalls, W/O the AV (think it's CA's AV) and W/O it's anti spyware component, so can't make personal judgments on it. If you go that route, I think that'll be a strong security choice.

Think CA is a good AV, just think NOD and KAV are better, and that's why, among other reasons, I don't like suites, only as strong as it's weakest component.

    Regards - Charles

i have in the past usually gone with a firewall and antivirus from different vendors but when za came out with the antivirus i thought i would give it a try. not a big fan of norton anymore have had to many clients had nothing but problems with it especially dial-up customers. their programs now-a-days seems way to overwhelming as far as the resources it takes away from windows. can always disable the virus part of za if i dont like it and use something different but the upgrade price is right so going to give it a shot.

    thanks for all the input.

    Why pay?

Our Trend Micro subscription expired and I decided to install the free versions of ZA and AVG. I'm liking them both. Really... I receive daily updates to AVG (well... probably every other day) and the ZA seems to be doing a nice job. AND best thing is it cost me nothing but the time to download and install.

your not getting all the bells and whistles with the free versions. yes, they are okay but if machine is important i would rather pay the $$$ and get all the bells and whistles. takes to darn long to rebuild my machine. not a fun process.

Bells and whistles generally require a greater use of system resources, tend to drag down a computer's performance (unless you turn them off.. then you might ask: why have them in the first place?) and have a tendency to dig their roots even deeper into one's registry.

Most of the MVP's ( charles... now don't fall out of your chair! ;-) ) recommend the free versions, believe it or not. Inoculate It (in its free days), Zone Alarm, AVG, Avast and so forth.

Firefox is certainly one of the premiere browsers in the world today and it's a freebie.. as is Opera 8 and Netscape 8. Like I said, if you want to pay well.. that's fine. I've paid and I've gone for free. Free is better.

the only program that i see that over loaded system resources is symantecs products - norton antivirus, system works and their internet security. they are definite resource hogs. even with my 3.4g system i have to reboot after norton does its thing once a week to get my system responsiveness back. i do like the free versions of sygate and avg. both very user friendly and sygates firewall is really nice when someone attempts an attack and you can trace it back to them. it is cool.

i have worked with bitdefender, trendmicro and za and neither of them from what i can see take up much resources and when they are done with their scans it gives the system back without rebooting. not sure what norton has done thats made them a resource hog but they should reevaluate the way their programs run.

for now i am sticking to paying for this protection and if za's internet security is using ca's antivirus then it probably is pretty good. rumor says ca is used in 80% of fortune 500 companies. so either it is pretty good or the big boss's know each other.
