I have just installed Mozilla 1.7.3 (last installation was 1.7.1). The spellchecker in the e-mail does not seem to catch any misspelled words.

    boutells,

In Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups | Composition
in the right panel ensure that "Check spelling before sending" is enabled.

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

It is enabled. The spellcheck actually takes place but does not identify misspelled words.

    boutells,

O.K., just hoping that it would be that simple! When you open the "Check Spelling" window, does the "Language" field show English/United Kingdom? Have you added words to the Dictionary, and if so do you see them in the persdict.dat file? Open the persdict.dat file with Wordpad, not NotePad, in order to view the words you have added.

Download the en_gb.xpi file from this site, and install it:
    http://www.mozcafe.com/spellchecker/

    Enable Software Installation first, in:
Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Software Installation
Click on the en_gb.xpi file, and the install will take place immediately. Don't be frightened by the dire warnings you receive.

Hopefully this will fix whatever the problem might be. If not, then uninstall Mozilla, using Add/Remove and reinstall.
