I recently switched to a new CPU tower and now have XP-Home installed. In order to obtain 'spell check' in Outlook Express, I had to install MS Word. Which I did. ('97 edition) Spell checker is now lit up but when checked an error appears: "OE An erro roccurred while spelling was being checked'. Is there a solution?
    Thanks in advance. Willieboye

I need some help with the following instructions, which I've copied and pasted from the link above:
    -------
How To: Fix spell checking in Outlook Express 6

If you are running Windows XP and are also using Microsoft Office 97, you may find that spell checking does not work in Outlook Express 6.0. When you try to spell check a message, you receive the message "an error occurred whilst the spelling was being checked ". The cause of this problem is a missing file which Outlook Express requires.

Solution .. Obtain a copy of the file csapi3t1.dll and place it in the folder "Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof ". Copies of this file may be extracted from the file mailnews.cab in an Internet Explorer 5.0 or 5.5 distribution set, the file win98_27.cab on a Windows 98 CD, or the file Win_10.cab on a Windows Me CD. A copy may also be downloaded by clicking on this link.

    Spell

    ---------

I downloaded the file to my desktop, however, I have some concerns about following these instructions further.

    1. I have (using WXP and OE6) two keys called 'shared'...one is named 'shared' and the other is 'shared tools'.
    2. 'Shared tools' seems to be the proper key as it contains a subkey called 'proofing tools' (and not 'proof' as in the instructions above).
    3. Under 'proofing tools' are more subkeys, one of which is labelled 'spelling'.
When I attempt to place the downloaded file from my desktop into 'proofing tools' I get an ominous message which says:

"The key will be restored on top of key 'Shared'. All value entries and subkeys of this key will be deleted" Want to continue?

Obviously, I didn't continue but wonder what I need to do now to complete this step without damaging something. Needless to say, I'm out of my depth here.

I checked the folder the article said to put csapi3t1.dll in. Yep, there it was, right there in Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof. (Spell check works in Outlook on this system).

Try putting the file where the article said to and hope for the best, perhaps? ;)

A little knowledge is not only dangerous, its time consuming.

I was trying to install the missing file by putting it into the registry...thanks to Miz, I simply explored my C: drive and found the location, and now the fix is installed and working.

I apologize for cluttering up this forum with what now seems such an easy fix.

    You folks are great.
