I have a Gateway desktop which has a jack on the back which is labeled in the user's manual as an optional SPDIF jack. Is this an input or output?

I'm trying to figure out a way to get the sound from a Verizon Set Top Box into my audio system. There is a Digital Audio Optical connector on the STB which I presume has the audio for the video I am successfully connecting thru the composite input on my display. However I get no sound when I connect the STB to the SPDIF jack.
