I was told that you could always trust MS updates so I clicked "yes" to the SP2 download. Boy! That was a bad choice. My whole system crashed. They tell me it was because some of the Hewlett Packard drivers and SP2 aren't compatible. If that was the case, why wasn't there a warning for those of use with HP machines?

Not only was I frustrated and inconvenienced but my machine (now recovered) is not the same. I used to be able to run my Sim and its expansions and now I can't. I never had a problem before. Now I do.

All my settings were caput and it has been a nightmare.

My biggest problem now is getting my The Sims game to play again. I've already downloaded it 4 times and it won't go past the loading stage.

Any one have any idea why? I try writing to Maxi or EA and it is hopeless, I never get an answer. This has been a 2 wk hell for me.

I run HP WinXP 504 Ram and CPU 2.40 Intel Pent 4

I used the recovery feature on my HD by using tapping f10 and selecting recover. I was led by a HP tech to do this.

When I was recovered my computer was just as it was the day I bought it and all the settings I had set to make my surfing perfect had to be redone and some of them i couldn't even remember what i had set them to. I finally think I have things right. For a while I couldn't even sign in to a bb because my security was too high, I couldn't open emails because my option was to not open any...etc. It took a long time to get things back. Everything is working except my Sims program. I never had a problem with it and now it freezes when I try to start it up. I cannot figure what is causing that. I used to play all 6 expansions now I can't even play the one. I shut off all background processes, shut down my virus detector, my fire wall and my popup stopper... and it still freezes during the loading process.

i'm a little dissapointed the HP tech took you down that route, it sounds like there would have been less invasive means to get you out of the jam.

At this point, have you gone up to windows update and gotten current with everything but SP2? Reinstalled graphics drivers?

We need more data about the state of your machine to know how to help you specifically. After you get sp1+security fixes on, if you are still broken, please post some detailed information about exactly what is failing and what error messages are displayed.

HP sent me recovery disks... but I hate to use them a this point unless I have to. Now they are telling me I need to reseat my Bios. Like I would know how to do that.

The Sims comes with several expansions... each a bit larger and more complex. I successfully downloaded: The Sims, Living Large, Hot Date and when I try to install VACATION I freeze where it installs the sound.far files.

Everything seems to be working ok otherwise. Some Internet pages are a bit slow, but otherwise OK.

You said: i'm a little dissapointed the HP tech took you down that route, it sounds like there would have been less invasive means to get you out of the jam.

At the time it looked like the best way. I could not use the computer at all when I turned it on it just kept rebooting... I was totally crashed. I couldn't wait 10 days for the recovery disks to arrive. I have them now, but hopefully don't need them.

I did reinstall Intel Extreme Graphics Driver and SP-1 and every upgrade for Windows XP except SP-2. I tried to download a BIOS upgrade but the one on the Windows XP page told me it was the wrong one for my machine but it isn't the wrong one. When I just now went in to copy my system diagnostics I got this error message:

DX DIAG ERROR: Could not get basic sound info, result code=0X80070057 Invalid argument.

At this point, have you gone up to windows update and gotten current with everything but SP2? Reinstalled graphics drivers?

    Here are my diagnostics:
