I don't know when this problem started to happen, however it looks like Windows 98 SE automatically would adjust the "Performance" setting in Advanced Audio Properties tab from good to best. Good is recommended by Windows. After restarting the PC it changes to best. This causes sound problems that result in voices being played poorly. I have to mention that I have updated the audio drivers to the latest. The sound card is integrated with the motherboard. The exact name of the driver is: Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA Audio Controller, date: 12-1-2004.

I haven't downgraded to any older drivers.

    Any hints appreciated.

Could it possible have started then or did it start before that ?

I have the OPPOSITE. I set things ( MIDI settings to be exact ) higher and my SB sound card sets them back down. And just like you find they sound better.

Are these voices coming from a M$ Agent charactor? chat program? internet streaming audio/video or streaming audio? other sources?
You didn't happen to get this driver file from the Windows Update page? If you did, you may have the wrong one. I say this as I get the same recommendation, except my original drivers were from Sensaura Ltd. You should get the proper drivers from the motherboard manufacture's website.
