    Hello all!
I'm back. I am having a problem with my sound.
I found the sound was very low. When I looked at the volume control
I found the slider under "wave Balance" had slipped to the bottom.
I moved it up, but as soon as I closed, it slipped right back. There was no indication that something was wrong I went to "device manager. "
    looked at "problem devices" and this is what I found;

    - "ESS AllegroX MPU-401 Compatible
    Unknown
    This Device Has a Problem: Code=28 (0x1C)
The drivers for this device are not installed correctly. To install the driver
for this device, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver. "

I did this, and this is what came up " Driver Not Installed "

I did a fresh install ,when I tried to find a new driver I got a message
" the best driver windows found is already installed for this device.
I completed the install and restsrted. No change, took another look at
    "problem devices "-,No problems
    please help!!

I had a similar problem and found that the culprit was Winamp. The application seemed to take over my volume controls, when I changed the volume or balance controls it changed the settings for anything using sounds. Changing the settings using Winamp's controls and rebooting, restored the proper settings and control. There seems to be a glitch in either Winamp or Windows, since the problem does not happen every time and it returns at random.

Try checking the volume settings in any programs that you have, as there may be other applications which like to take over the volume controls.

    HI Rcerrato!
    Thanks for replying!
I am inclined to agree with you. Although I have never
had a problem with winamp (I use winamp 2.91)
    Windows 98 SE (build 4.10.2222)
533 megahertz Intel Pentium III; 128 Megabytes Installed Memory
I have been working on this for a week!
    everything plays through winamp
CD's I just bought music from internet radio stations
(I did not make winamp my default player, but that's all i've got)
    I have taken your advise,went into winamp,moved
a few thing around.Could you tell me what settings
I should change, and if possible how it's done?
I am not cured but I feel a lot better knowing it's not a bug
    there is still hope!
    thanks again
    eagerly awaiting your reply!
