I'm running Win98 SE and ever since the hard drive was formatted and 98 SE reinstalled when ever I play a sound file (of any type) the computer restarts.

It's become very irritating .... any thoughts?

This is a new one to me, but I have to ask if the motherboard drivers were installed as the first thing, and if this is an onboard sound card.
The restart could be heat related, such as the motherboard chipset overheating.

On the Windows install, did you get any error or unusual
messages ? Have you tried a re-install of Windows ?
Or a registry clean ? Does the PC reboot when you open
other files, or only with sound files ? What, in your registry,
is shown as the .exe file for eg .wav or .mid files ?
    regards

    thanxs markp62 !!

The sound file problem was overheating related.

The fan is now working properly and I haven't had any problems since.
